The United Nations decorated the Chilean peacekeeping force in Haiti with the "Medal Parade," the Chilean Army said in a statement on Monday.
Chilean soldiers of the Battalion Chile 12th were awarded the medals in a ceremony held in Cabo Haitiano city, north of Haiti, the statement said.
Chief of the Chilean battalion, Colonel Boris Mardones said themedal "reaffirms our commitment with the mission that we will continue fulfilling in favor of the people who suffer and need us."
Heidi Annabi, the U.N. special representative of the secretary-general who attended the ceremony, congratulated the Chilean troops and said that "the work you do is very important, which has been proved through your participation in the mission."
Chile has supported the U.N. peace missions over the past six decades and more. However, its participation in Haiti has marked a milestone of the country's contribution to peace in the region, said the statement,
Since 2004, more than 3,500 Chilean soldiers have performed peacekeeping missions in Haiti as part of the multinational force led by the U.N. Stabilization Mission in the country.
