Aug. 20, 1995: At least 500 passengers were packed into the hull of the 60-foot wooden boat when it left the northern coast of Haiti. Only 457 were accounted for when the boat was intercepted off the coast of the Bahamas. Many passengers who disobeyed the captain's orders were thrown overboard, survivors said.
