Dec. 23, 1993: Cuba told the U.S. Coast Guard on Friday of rescuing eight Haitians off Cuba`s northeastern coast. The eight said their ship, the 70-foot wooden freighter Virgen Mirach, had gone down off Great Inagua Island in the southeastern Bahamas on Dec. 21. They said the boat was carrying 396 people when it sank, according to the Cuban report. The ship was wooden-hulled, 50 to 60 feet long, and named Vier ge Miracle.
