In July of 2007, I made my first visit to Haiti as a member of a human rights fact-finding delegation sponsored by the Haiti Action Committee, a California Bay Area solidarity organization. Since my coming into Black consciousness as a teenager in the late 1960s, I revered the Haitian Revolution and its ability to defeat three imperialist powers - France, Spain and England. Most of my life the names of Haitian revolutionaries Boukman, L'Ouverture and Dessalines have been evoked during libations and served as inspirations for my comrades and me.
